What Is Clinical Pilates?

Clinical Pilates at Premier is an individualised exercise and rehabilitation program using reformer and mat-based movements. You begin with an assessment by a physiotherapist or osteopath, learn your tailored program one-to-one, then complete it in a small class with no more than five participants.

Stop Guessing What Your Body Should Be Doing

Generic classes can leave you wondering whether you are using the equipment correctly, choosing the right exercises or making an existing problem worse.

Premier Clinical Pilates starts with an individual assessment by a physiotherapist or osteopath. We learn what has been holding you back, assess how you move and build your starting program before you enter a small-group class.

You arrive knowing what to do. Your physio or osteopath can watch, guide and progress you instead of leaving you to copy the person beside you.

Everything You Need to Start Clinical Pilates Properly

The Intro Pack gives your physiotherapist or osteopath time to understand your starting point, build your individual program and make sure you are confident before you join a class.

$195 for new clients — normally $390.

Individual assessment

A one-to-one assessment of your history, movement, goals and what your program needs to address.

One-to-one program setup

A second one-to-one session to learn your exercises, use the equipment and refine your starting program.

Your first small-group class

A class with a maximum of five people, following your own program with professional guidance.

Follow-up reassessment

A one-to-one review to assess progress, answer questions and update your program.

Private health rebates may be available

Eligible physiotherapy, osteopathy and myotherapy appointments may attract an extras rebate, depending on your fund, cover and appointment type.

GP-referred Medicare pathways accepted

Eligible physiotherapy or osteopathy consultations may attract a Medicare rebate under a GP Chronic Condition Management Plan.

GP and surgeon referrals welcome

Premier works with referred patients across pre-operative and post-operative rehabilitation, including spinal rehabilitation pathways.

Is Clinical Pilates Right for You?

Clinical Pilates is for people who want a more individual and structured way to build strength, improve movement and return to the things their body needs to do.

It may be particularly useful if you want to:

Rebuild after pain or injury

Restore strength, movement and confidence after back, neck, shoulder, hip, knee or other musculoskeletal problems—without being dropped straight into a generic exercise class.

Continue rehabilitation after surgery

Progress from your initial treatment or post-operative rehabilitation into a structured program that helps you regain capacity for everyday life, work, training or sport. Premier also works with patients referred by GPs and surgeons, including for spinal rehabilitation.

Feel stronger and more stable

Build control around areas that feel weak, unstable or unreliable, including when hypermobility, recurring injuries or poor movement confidence have made exercise difficult.

Return to exercise, running or sport

Prepare your body for the demands of the gym, running, team sport or recreational activity with exercises selected around what you need to get back to.

Exercise during pregnancy or after birth

Continue moving with appropriate individual modifications during pregnancy, or progressively rebuild strength and confidence after birth.

Stay active as you get older

Maintain strength, balance, mobility and confidence so that everyday movement and the activities you enjoy remain easier to manage.

If pain, previous injuries or uncertainty have made you cautious, your individual program gives you a clearer starting point and professional guidance as you progress.

You do not need Pilates experience, exceptional flexibility or an existing level of fitness. You need a starting point that reflects your body and a program that can progress with you.

If you simply want a large, fast-paced class where everyone follows the same workout, standard Pilates may suit you better. If you want individual assessment, a tailored program and closer supervision, Premier Clinical Pilates is likely the better fit.

Use Your Cover or GP Referral

Clinical Pilates at Premier is connected to registered physiotherapy, osteopathy and myotherapy services, which may give you more ways to use your existing health cover or referral pathway.

Private health rebates

Eligible physiotherapy and osteopathy appointments may attract a private health insurance rebate. Eligible myotherapy appointments with Nathan may also attract a rebate where your extras policy includes myotherapy.

Some funds may provide benefits for eligible Clinical Pilates or group physiotherapy sessions. Your benefit depends on your fund, policy, practitioner recognition and appointment type. A Pilates class is not automatically claimable as a myotherapy service.

GP and specialist referrals

Eligible patients referred under a GP Chronic Condition Management Plan may receive a Medicare rebate for physiotherapy or osteopathy consultations. These plans provide up to five eligible allied-health services per calendar year across all referred providers.

Premier also welcomes referrals from GPs and surgeons for pre-operative and post-operative rehabilitation, including spinal conditions. You do not ordinarily need a referral to begin Clinical Pilates unless you are using a specific Medicare or funded pathway.

Not sure what you can claim? Tell reception about your health fund or referral when you claim the Intro Pack. We can help you choose the appropriate appointment, and you can confirm your exact benefit with your fund before attending.

Why Premier Clinical Pilates Is Different

Your own program

You are not expected to follow one generic sequence. Your exercises are selected and progressed around your assessment, your goals and how your body responds.

Clinical guidance and close supervision

Your program begins with a physiotherapist or osteopath. Small-group sessions are supervised by our qualified Pilates team, including physiotherapists, osteopaths and an experienced myotherapist/Pilates instructor. Your practitioner watches your movement and guides adjustments as needed.

Small groups—not a crowded studio

Classes are limited to five people, creating more opportunity for individual attention while keeping the energy of a group session.

A pathway from rehabilitation into strength

Build useful strength, control and confidence that carries into everyday life, training and sport—not merely complete a class.

Clinical Pilates vs a Standard Pilates Class

Both can build movement confidence and strength, but the starting point and level of individual guidance are different.

What changes Premier Clinical Pilates Standard group Pilates
Starting point An individual physiotherapy or osteopathy assessment before your first class. You generally enter a class without a clinical movement assessment.
Your exercises A program selected around your body, goals, injury history and starting capacity. The group usually follows the same general sequence.
Supervision Assessment and program development with a physiotherapist or osteopath, followed by closely supervised small-group sessions. One instructor guides the whole group through the session.
Class size No more than five people, each following an individual program. Often a larger group completing a shared class plan.
Progression Your program can be reviewed and adjusted as your strength, control and confidence change. Progression generally follows the format and pace of the class.

Clinical Pilates FAQs

What is Clinical Pilates?

Clinical Pilates is an individualised exercise and rehabilitation approach using reformer and mat-based movements. At Premier, you begin with a physiotherapist or osteopath assessment, learn your tailored program one-to-one and then complete it in a small supervised class.

Do I need Pilates experience?

No. Your individual assessment and one-to-one setup teach you the equipment, exercises and starting pace before your first class.

Is this different from regular Pilates?

Yes. Your program begins with a physiotherapist or osteopath assessment and is selected for you, rather than requiring everyone to follow the same class sequence. Small-group sessions are supervised by our qualified Pilates team.

Is Clinical Pilates the same as reformer Pilates?

Not exactly. Reformer Pilates describes exercise performed on a reformer machine. Clinical Pilates may use reformer and mat-based exercises, but the important difference is that your program begins with an individual assessment and is selected around your goals and starting capacity.

Do I need an assessment before joining a class?

New participants start with an individual assessment and one-to-one setup so your physiotherapist or osteopath can select the appropriate exercises and starting level.

Can Clinical Pilates be used for injury rehabilitation?

Yes. Clinical Pilates can form part of a broader rehabilitation plan when your physiotherapist or osteopath considers it appropriate. Your exercises can be selected and progressed around the injury, your current capacity and what you want to return to.

How often should I attend Clinical Pilates?

Your ideal frequency depends on your goals, starting point and overall rehabilitation or exercise plan. Your physiotherapist or osteopath can recommend a practical starting schedule after the assessment.

Do you offer pregnancy and postnatal Clinical Pilates?

Clinical Pilates may be adapted during pregnancy or after birth, depending on your individual circumstances and assessment. Tell reception when claiming the Intro Pack so they can help match you with an appropriate practitioner and starting pathway.

How many people are in each class?

Classes are limited to a maximum of five participants.

Which locations offer Clinical Pilates?

Clinical Pilates is available in Brunswick, Fitzroy North and Thornbury. Reception can help you choose the right studio and current class time.

What happens after the Intro Pack?

If you choose to continue, you can attend regular small-group sessions while your individual program is reviewed and progressed over time. There is no obligation to continue after the Intro Pack.

Can I claim through private health insurance?

Eligible physiotherapy, osteopathy and myotherapy appointments may attract an extras rebate. Some funds may also provide benefits for eligible Clinical Pilates or group physiotherapy sessions. Your benefit depends on your fund, policy, practitioner recognition and appointment type, so confirm the appointment with Premier and the benefit with your fund before attending.

Can I use a GP Chronic Condition Management Plan?

Eligible patients with a valid GP referral may receive a Medicare rebate for physiotherapy or osteopathy consultations under a GP Chronic Condition Management Plan. The pathway provides up to five eligible allied-health services per calendar year across all referred providers. Myotherapy is not included in this Medicare pathway, and a gap payment may apply.
