New symptoms or a familiar flare-up — get help with the next step.

Do not wait for a routine appointment if you have new bladder or bowel control problems, numbness around your groin or bottom, or severe or worsening leg weakness. Seek urgent medical care; call 000 in an emergency. New sciatica symptoms should also be discussed with your doctor. Healthdirect guidance.

HELP WITH THE DAY IN FRONT OF YOU

Less guarding. More getting on with life.

A car journey, a workday or a short walk can feel demanding when pain travels down your leg. You want relief and a clearer idea of what you can do comfortably.

Sciatica describes a nerve-related pain pattern, not every type of back or leg pain. We will listen to what happens when you sit, stand or move, check relevant findings and explain what they mean for treatment.

You do not need to have tried everything first. Tell us what has helped before, if anything, and what you want to get back to now.

TREATMENT AND PRACTICAL GUIDANCE

A plan for relief and everyday movement.

Hands-on care

Soft-tissue techniques or joint mobilisation may help with discomfort and restricted movement. When selected, they sit alongside exercise and advice, rather than replacing an active recovery plan.

Manageable movement

Exercises chosen around your symptoms and current capacity. We explain how to approach movement and adapt the plan if an exercise is not helping.

Advice for your routine

Work through sitting, walking, lifting or training demands. Agree on changes that make sense for your day and review how you respond.

Your first visit combines assessment with appropriate treatment, with your consent. Bring existing reports and tell us about numbness, strength changes and any current medical care.

Before you book

Which appointment should I book for sciatica?

Physiotherapy is a practical starting point for assessment, exercise and activity guidance. An osteopath may also be appropriate. Choose a familiar practitioner or ask reception for help. New or worsening weakness needs prompt medical care, not a routine booking.

Will treatment start at my first appointment?

Appropriate treatment can begin during your first appointment, with your consent. Your practitioner will first check your symptoms and nerve-related signs, then explain the plan. If medical assessment is needed first, they will guide you to that next step.

Should I bring a scan or referral?

Bring any existing scan reports, referral letters and relevant medical information. You do not need to arrange new imaging yourself before contacting us. Your practitioner will discuss when review by your doctor or further investigation is needed.

What if symptoms are not improving?

Tell your practitioner about changes in your leg pain, movement or strength. Progress is reviewed and the plan adjusted. Ongoing symptoms may need coordination with your GP or specialist rather than simply repeating the same treatment.

Understand your treatment options

Read where massage and osteopathy fit in sciatica care. If your symptoms stay mainly in your back, explore back pain treatment. Your practitioner can help you choose the right pathway.
